My story

May is one of my favourite months, as trees come into full leaf in hopeful beauty. I'm privileged to live in a place where I have easy access to open spaces and nature, and can afford a wide variety of locally produced food. So in my photo challenge this year, I'll celebrate 70 different trees while inviting support to help people in much tougher circumstances grow fresh food.

Christian Aid Week this year features a project they fund in Nairobi, Kenya, giving families crowded informal settlements the training and equipment to create tiny urban farms near their homes. Check out the illustrated stories on the website showing mothers Belinda and Fridah. Find out how growing spinach, beetroot, maize, kale, tomatoes and indigenous vegetables — some to feed their families and some to sell  - has changed their lives.

I'll share a selection of the photos on this page through the month, and make a slideshow available at the end.

How your money helps

You can support families facing the daily stress of food insecurity in Nairobi.

In the crowded and noisy settlements of Nairobi, parents like Fridah wake up knowing they must earn money – otherwise their children won’t eat that evening. But with tools, seeds and training from our partner, Beacon of Hope, families can grow nutritious vegetables in small city spaces and grow hope for the future.

Every pound you raise could help:

  • provide seeds and tools so people can grow food in small spaces.
  • fund training so people can plan ahead and protect their livelihoods.
  • support community-led projects that strengthen food security and incomes.
