My story

Fridah, recently widowed, rents a corrugated metal shelter to make a home for her teenage twin sons, her daughter, and her four-year-old grandson. They have no running water and must share a toilet with their neighbours. Fridah used to wake each morning knowing that if she didn’t earn money that day her family would go hungry that night.

Fridah joined the ‘Imarisha Kilimo’ project run by Christian Aid’s partner, Beacon of Hope. They provided her with tools and seeds, and trained her in vertical planting and ways of growing without soil. Now, tucked away at the end of a concrete alley, you can find Fridah’s lush, plant-packed urban farm. She is growing kale, tomatoes and indigenous vegetables that her family can eat and that she can sell at market to provide an income.

Please give what you can this Christian Aid Week to enable others like Fridah to be given help to help themselves.

How your money helps

You can support families facing the daily stress of food insecurity in Nairobi.

In the crowded and noisy settlements of Nairobi, parents like Fridah wake up knowing they must earn money – otherwise their children won’t eat that evening. But with tools, seeds and training from our partner, Beacon of Hope, families can grow nutritious vegetables in small city spaces and grow hope for the future.

Every pound you raise could help:

  • provide seeds and tools so people can grow food in small spaces.
  • fund training so people can plan ahead and protect their livelihoods.
  • support community-led projects that strengthen food security and incomes.
