Christian Aid Week began in 1957 with a small act of generosity raising £26,000. Decades later the purpose of Christian Aid remains the same – to mobilise the Christian community to take action against poverty and injustice.
This year, Christian Aid is focusing on Dagoretti Township in Nairobi.
Fridah’s Story: Fridah lives with her children and grandson in a small rented corrugated metal shelter. There is no running water and space is extremely limited. With no refrigeration or storage, she has to travel long distances 6 days a week to buy food to feed her family.
Fridah’s situation changed when she joined Imarisha Kilimo which is an urban farming project run by Christian Aid’s partner Beacon of Hope. Through training, and with tools and seeds, Fridah learnt how to make and use a cone garden which is a space efficient circular stacked garden in which she can plant seeds. She now grows kale, tomatoes and indigenous vegetables in a narrow alley near her home. She sells some of her produce, and uses the rest to feed her family. She now has stability and is able to plan for the future. Her urban farm is small. But it carries big hopes; hopes for education, independence, and a future beyond daily uncertainty.
Across the world children, living in poverty, go to bed hungry. Please support their hard-working parents, this Christian Aid Week, by clicking the "donate" button and, if you are a tax payer, remember to tick the gift aid box. Thank you.
